Our goal is to change the current negative perceptions of Africa, and replace these with the idea of hope, vibrancy and joy – some of the many things Africa has to offer. We are creating a documentary about a group of youth from South Africa with a particularly special talent (http://vimeo.com/50584604) travelling to Asia to perform in front of their largest audience ever... 15 gumboot dancers from Kliptown Youth Program (KYP) in South Africa will be heading to China to perform in three massive concerts in March 2013 with audiences of up to 1,000 people. We want to capture this experience on film – the first experiences, the nerves, the reactions... We want to create a documentary that’s going to show the positive, bright-spirited youth of South Africa, and the potential they have for the future. Rachel Dickinson, our creative director, is passionate about creating films and documentaries, and is excited to be heading to China in March to capture her footage for the documentary, named ‘Stomp It Out’.
Firstly, the gumboot dancers themselves – for some, the gumboot tour will be their first trip on a plane and out of South Africa. They’ll have the chance to experience a whole new culture, and show off their talent to audiences, while taking pride in where they are from and what they stand for.
Secondly, our hope is that the viewers of our documentary will be challenge to think of Africa and Kliptown in a different light – a positive light. We hope they’ll see the joy, hope, community spirit and potential of each of these dancers, and connect with the adventure the gumboot dancers are embarking on.
Finally, the money raised through ticket sales and donations will go support KYP and other projects nurturing young people around the world.
